So, I’ve been sitting at my computer doing my normal research for social media, debating on grading but knowing that I need to amp up my social media and Klout score. Literally, everyday I wake up send out some tweets through Buffer and Klout content suggestions and wait. The next morning, I wake up check out my Klout score and repeat the Buffer and Klout. What I’ve noticed is that all of this helps but I need to create original content. Content that sets me apart.

And then. As I’m contemplating. Simple Man by Lynard Skynard came on. As I listened to the words, it made me realize that the whole time Lynard Skynard wasn’t really singing about how to live simply. No, Lynard Skynard was a time traveler that was teaching us about Social Media.

 

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.

Really what Skynard was saying was listen to your industry and understand their culture. Always listen to what your community is saying.

And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.

If you listen to what people say. You can then start your social media strategy. It will be possible to understand what it is the community wants and needs from your posts. Do what others lacking. Fill the void.

 

Take your time… Don’t live too fast,

Always take your time on social media, don’t jump into a phase that you’re not at. If you’re new to social media, then it’s ok to just listen and reshare. Learn the community and then start engaging.

 

Troubles will come and they will pass.

And sometimes people will say negative comments about your brand. That’s ok. Deal with it and turn the negative commenters into brand advocates.

Always be passionate about whatever it is you’re writing on social media. The messages you are creating need to be genuine. Love social media. And it will love you.

Be careful what you say on social media, because people are always watching (like the NSA). What you say on social media is public. Kiss your privacy goodbye!

On social media, don’t be something you aren’t. Always understand the brand you are trying to create or be. Understand the message you are trying to get across to you community. Also, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. All you really have to do is understand your brand and create simple tactics to get across your message.

 

Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold

Sometimes you may be tempted to not take the time to work on social media, but really you should spend an hour a day working on your social media. More if you have time.

 

All that you need is in your soul,

In this line, Skynard is saying you have all of the information you need. You just need to sit and write. You are an expert, use your expertise and become an influencer or a thought leader.
And you can do this if you try.

Is to be satisfied.

All it takes is a little bit of effort. If you put in the effort, you will succeed in social media. Be an influencer. Just make sure to follow the social media rules. At the end of the day, you need content.

Social media takes time, practice and patience. Make sure to always keep working towards your goal. It may be awhile to get some Klout and traction on social media, but if you follow your social media rules you’ll be all set.
